Named after Tenuta Ulisse's founder, they were never going to make this a dud. Only 6,600 bottles were produced for this, its 2nd release.

The grapes are left to slightly over-ripen before soft crushing and 20-25 days of maceration, some in stainless steel and some in cement tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrique and the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak.

The wine maker describes this as its "gentle giant" and that is fitting. This wine is majestic, but also highly complex. The colour is striking, a deep ruby red. The nose is rich with notes of prune and cherry jam, but the complexity comes when you notice liquorice and cocoa.

Like many top Montepulcianos, this is a fabulous food wine, particularly with red meat and rich dishes. However, we love Tenuta Ulisse's suggestion that 'Don Antonio' is excellent as an after-dinner wine or "meditation wine"...we'll drink to that, salute Don Antonio!

We expect this wine will evolve over the next 5-7 years through careful cellaring.

This wine has received no ratings, but its baby brother, Tenuta Ulisse Amaranta Montepulciano d'Abruzzo consistently receives top marks from Luca Maroni.
